The name Diphda derives from the Arabic "al-difda' al-thani," meaning "the second frog" — a reference to a pair of bright stars that ancient Bedouin astronomers saw as frogs. The "first frog" was Fomalhaut in Piscis Austrinus, while Diphda was the second. Menkar comes from "al-manhar," meaning "the nostril" — accurately describing its position at the Sea Monster's snout.
