Eyepiece Basics: What the Numbers Mean

Every eyepiece has three key specifications that determine what you will see and how comfortable the view is.

Focal length (mm): This determines magnification when paired with your telescope. Divide your telescope's focal length by the eyepiece's focal length to get magnification. A 900mm telescope with a 20mm eyepiece gives 45x. With a 10mm eyepiece, 90x. Shorter focal lengths = higher magnification.

Apparent field of view (AFOV): How wide the view looks through the eyepiece. Standard Plossl eyepieces offer 50-52°. Wide-angle designs offer 60-70°. Ultra-wide designs (Tele Vue Ethos) offer 100° — like looking through a porthole. Wider AFOV provides more immersive views and makes finding targets easier.

Eye relief (mm): The distance your eye needs to be from the eyepiece to see the full field. Longer eye relief (15-20mm) is better for eyeglass wearers. Short eye relief (5-10mm) is common on high-power Plossls and can be uncomfortable. If you wear glasses, look for eyepieces with at least 15mm of eye relief.



Plossl Eyepieces — The Standard

The Plossl (pronounced "ploss-uhl") is the most common eyepiece design, found in virtually every telescope's included accessory kit. It uses a four-element, two-group design that delivers sharp, well-corrected images at an affordable price. Most Plossls offer a 50-52° apparent field of view — comfortable but not immersive. Eye relief is generally adequate at medium focal lengths (10-20mm) but becomes tight at short focal lengths (under 10mm).

Plossl eyepieces are an excellent choice for budget-conscious observers, especially in medium focal lengths (12-25mm). Celestron's Omni Plossl series and Meade's Series 4000 are well-regarded for their price. The main limitation is the narrow field — at 50°, you get a "keyhole" view compared to modern wide-angle designs. For planetary observing, however, the narrower field is less important because planets are small targets anyway.
