Mount Types Explained
Beyond the Alt-Az vs EQ decision, there are several specific mount designs and features to understand.
Dobsonian Mount
A Dobsonian mount is a simplified alt-az design using a rocker box and Teflon bearings. It is the most stable and affordable mount per unit of payload — a $400 Dobsonian mount can hold a 25-pound optical tube. Dobsonians are purely manual (push-to-look) with no motors. They are ideal for visual deep-sky observing where quick panning between targets matters more than tracking. The trade-off is bulk: Dobsonian bases are large and not easily transported.
German Equatorial Mount (GEM)
The German equatorial mount is the standard design for astrophotography. A counterweight balances the optical tube on one side of the mount head. GEMs range from portable units (Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer, $350) for camera lenses only, up to permanent-observatory-class mounts (10Micron, $10,000+) for professional imaging. Mid-range GEMs like the Sky-Watcher HEQ5 ($1,200) and Celestron AVX ($900) are the sweet spot for serious amateur astrophotographers.
Fork Mount
Fork mounts are commonly found on Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes (like Celestron NexStar and EdgeHD series). The optical tube sits between two arms of a fork, which attaches to a wedge or tripod. Fork mounts can operate in alt-az mode for visual or EQ mode when mounted on a wedge. They are compact and stable but less flexible if you want to swap optical tubes. The Celestron NexStar Evolution and NexStar SE series use single-arm fork mounts that are compact and include built-in GoTo.
Computerized / GoTo Mounts
A GoTo mount includes motors and a computer hand controller that automatically slews to any of 40,000+ objects in its database. After a simple 2-star or 3-star alignment, you select a target from the hand controller and the mount moves there automatically. GoTo is available on both alt-az and EQ mounts. For beginners, GoTo eliminates the frustration of finding faint objects. The trade-off: GoTo adds cost ($200-500 premium), weight, and requires battery power (8x AA batteries or a rechargeable power tank).
