The mechanics

A full Moon stands opposite the Sun, so it borrows the sky path the Sun follows six months away. In late November the Sun crawls low across the southern sky — which hands the full Moon the mirror-image trajectory: the high arc of a late-spring Sun. From mid-northern latitudes the Beaver Moon culminates far higher than September's or October's full Moons did, and each month's full Moon will climb higher still until the December full Moon — the Cold Moon — tops out the cycle.

Every degree of altitude means less atmosphere between your eyepiece and the Moon. 4. Patrol the limb and libration zones

The extreme edge of the disk keeps its relief even at full phase — foreshortened crater rims and mountains in profile — and libration tips a slightly different sliver of the farside limb into view each month.
